about the placement and its function in socialist economy. I think the leftcom article i read was more about general commodity production in socialist economy, they make the argument that it was commodity production that held back the socialist states of the past.

I just wanted to hear your thoughts on the role of commodity production plays in socialist economy and what it takes to abolish it and if it was able to be abolished in the past.

A commodity is any good produced for its exchange value, rather than just for its use value. A mother cooking a soup for their children has use value, but it has no exchange value since the children do not have to give anything in return. It's not a commodity therefore.

The commodity form will never be abolished in one stroke as some of the more naive ultraleftists propose, but it would be a gradual process. Historically, socialist nations have made progress within this abolition. For example, real estate and housing was no longer commodified in the USSR. Housing was built for the purpose to house people, not for the purpose of selling it on a market. No rent was required in many nations. Rather than rent, upkeep costs were taken from the surplus value produced - but this is not an exchange in the economic sense, it is just socialism in action.

The commodity form however remained intact in many fields of life, and, worse of all, in the business-to-business sector, something that was completely unnecessary. Commodities are one thing in a business-to-consumer setting, where the planning involved is more subject to seasonal whims of consumption and personal tastes. However, for the different industries owned by the same state to exchange commodities was a failure of historic socialist states. There should have been absolutely zero money accounting between them, zero exchange, but rather a as-needed basis calculation by the planning authorities.

This planning however didn't come to fruition, first because technology held the calculations back, but later moreso because the political powers opposed cybernetic planning since it would have harmed many politicians, corrupt foremen and factory managers and exposed much corruption and inefficiency.

For the worker to be free, the commodity exchange has to be driven to a minimum, since it is the worker who has to produce any commodity, which in turn subjugates his labor not to the maxim of what is useful for society, but what is useful for exchange - two things that need not overlap, especially when we take into consideration that commodity production also occurs for the purpose of exporting goods. These exports can then be used for the nation to pursue trade surpluses, something that isn't always as useful as popular opinion proclaims:

Upon the final a***ysis do you find that you have gained anything by your policy of always selling to foreigners without ever buying from them? Have you gained any money by the process? But you cannot retain it. It has passed through your hands without being of the least use. The more it increases the more does its value diminish while the value of other
things increases proportionally. (Mercier de la Rivi`ere, L’Ordre Naturel et Essentiel des Societes Politiques, 1767)

Gradually, the commodity form should be abolished, so that our society will in the future not be organized according to buying and selling, but according to the motto of “from all according to his abilities, to all according to his needs”.

The aforementioned commodity form does not stop at items: We must also reject the dynamic of capitalism commodifying every aspect of human existence and ultimately turning us into a commodity ourselves, to be bought and sold. We consider this demeaning to the dignity that all humans possess. Since it is our world-historic project to restore the dignity we have lost with the appearance of class subjugation, we, the producers, shall no longer be alienated from our own labor.

The abolition of the commodity form however does not change the fact that time remains the scarcest resource of all. Therefore, we must organize our society in such a way that workers need to work as little as possible while still being able to reach our collective goals. Ultimately, workers should be able to have as much free time as possible, up to a point where people work only because they want to and not because they have to. This goal can only be achieved through rational planning and increased automation.

Planning in general is our strongest tool in transitioning towards a communist mode of production. We must reject the anarchy of markets, their irrationality, their unreliability and their absolute dependence on chasing after money. Instead, we must use the principles of cybernetics, the technologies of modern telecommunications and the demands of the populace to create, monitor and execute our economic plans, each bringing us one step further in our transition towards a better society.

Such an advanced form of planning is only possible if the means of productions are centrally owned by the state in its role as representative of the workers. We can not allow the whims of individual workers to hold our society as hostage in the form of market socialism, syndicalism and the likes. Only with centralized ownership can we execute plans with the highest efficiency.

Tied together with planning is the abolition of money. From the moment states issued money and compelled its return in tax, people saw the world in its silver mirror, and in this mirror, the world can only be seen in reverse. The very instrument of subjection came to appear as the truest of true wealth. The actually useful crops and tools appeared as mere instruments to acquire money, which alone now counted as real value. Soon, money was no longer a means to an end – it became an end in itself, a circulation unconnected with the satisfaction of wants, an accumulation that knows no limits, no bounds, a restless never-ending process with no goal in sight, completely divorced from any real aims of use-value.

Money first appeared around the time class appeared. For class to now disappear, money must alsodisappear. Instead, we must for the organization of our economy use labor-vouchers that behave very differently than money, as they cannot circulate, so that no one can “make money out of money” anymore. No longer will such parasitism be allowed, for all “passive income” such as interests and rents are, under the veils of the economy, merely the extraction of surplus value provided by actual labor.
