ive seen some (definitely fringe tendency) comments that duterte is closer to a nonaligned leader than a straight up neoliberal, pointing to free healthcare, free university, indigenous autonomous zones, and a lot of (china backed) structural projects. this is something that i think warrants a lot of evidence to make the claim for so ive been searching for a bit trying to piece together what credit this argument has.
He's a right-wing populist, a term usually used for fearmongering but in this case it's right.

I’ve seen that too but that’s massive cope/contrarianism. Being non-aligned is as much about goals as it is policy. Stuff can be okay or agreeable in a vacuum but w/o approval of a leader. Like him passing free healthcare is good (if that’s true), but people just call him NA to be contrarian since he was RU/China aligned. No one is calling Obama NA just because he wanted government healthcare in 2008. Duterte legit stated his goal was to make the Philippines more palatable to foreign investors. That’s just being a capitalist neoliberal regardless of if a few policies are okay. It’s the same thing with Trump. He suggested government seizure of the iron industry in 2016 so idiots on Twitter are like “see?? He’s a communist!!” Ironic or not it’s idiotic contrarian discourse no one really believe.
What do you mean
the claim that duterte is more nonaligned than right wing
Had this mostly center-right friend and we talked about Scarface and he said "yeah castro sent all the criminals to the USA thats why marco rubio and those guys are so retärded"
the claim that duterte is more nonaligned than right wing
Those aren't mutually exclusive, especially since the end of the (first
)Cold War
As far as foreign policy goes, he tries to strike a balance between China and the USA as much as he can, and he will hate on both sides whenever it is convenient. He is an opportunist in that way.
Economically, it might be similar, some welfarism and so on to gain support but at the same time try to attract foreign investment and liberalize trade
Socially he is very conservative of course
That one communist leader was his mentor in his youth, so there is a weird thing where he attacks them but also begrudgingly has to accept some of their influence (the communists there have a dual strategy of working both overground and underground)
As I said, he is a right-wing populist similar to Trump if Trump hadn't been as cucked by his handlers to just enact bogstandard GOP policies
Same guy respected Castro for the sole reason that Castro "used a gun in the revolution meaning he put skin in the game", his entire worldview revolves around RISKTAKING and PUTTING SKIN IN THE GAME and MERITOCRACY and ACCOUNTABILITY

This is the position of the average voter
Let's f***in GOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
the claim that duterte is more nonaligned than right wing
That seems pretty divorced from reality
Is there something wrong with ridding your country of dissidents if their agendas were homophobic?
yes

and so on
Zizek intensifies
You’re saying we should protect homophobes?
they do have basic human rights yes. Of course that’s a strawman because they purged more than just homophobes

I personally don’t think those who aim to oppress minorities deserve protection themselves
You know @plankton is some rich snobby c***because they have no clue what the implications of “protecting oppressors because muh rights” are
@americana just ignore this nigga , the notion they just disappeared dissidents is funny when there's a big Christian right in the country and 33% people voted against the new law
