they cared so much about that they turned away tens of thousands of jewish refugees who tried to come the country in the beginning of the ramping up of persecution under the nazis and allowed the German American Bund to be established which started a nazi colony & youth camp on Long Island

one of the biggest reasons the US government focused on spreading specific war-time information about the japanese mainly, and if they did focus on germany, hitler as a threat/conquerer of europe rather than as a perpetrator of the holocaust was because they felt if they focused on the holocaust or treatment of jews & minorities he would have been too sympathetic to the population

  • Aug 28, 2022

tbf the HUAC which had been long established at the time did try to investigate and shutdown the german american bund because they did consider it unamerican, but failed to do so because they couldn't pin any specific laws against them until even wartime where they were then shut down for promoting wartime enemies

In 1939, more than 5,000 Americans were randomly selected and asked in a poll whether they agreed with the following statements:
In the United States, the Jews have the same standing as any other people and they should be treated in all ways exactly like all other Americans. (39% of Americans agreed that Jews have the same standing as others.)
Jews are in some way distinct from other Americans but they make respected and useful citizens so long as they do not try to mingle socially where they are not wanted. (53% of Americans viewed Jews as different than themselves.)
Jews have somewhat different business methods and, therefore, measures should be taken to prevent Jews from getting too much power in the business world. (32% wanted to restrict Jewish business methods.)
We should make it a policy to deport Jews from this country to some new homeland as fast as it can be done without inhumanity. (Nearly 10% favored the deportation of Jews.) 8% had no opinion.

actually didn't know this, was linked in the related of the above

Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Honduras, and Panama stated that they wanted no traders or intellectuals, code words for Jews. Argentina said it had already accommodated enough immigrants from Central Europe. Canada cited its unemployment problem. Australia said that it had no “racial problems” and did not want to create any by bringing in Jewish refugees. Imperial countries such as Britain, France, and the Netherlands said that their tropical territories offered only limited prospects for European refugees. League of Nations High Commissioner Sir Neill Malcolm was openly hostile to the idea of a new refugee organization . . . The Washington Post headlined one story on the conference, “YES, BUT—.” It noted, “it has been a disappointment, if not altogether a surprise . . . that delegates take the floor to say, We feel sorry for the refugees and potential refugees but—.”

The Dominican Republic was the only country that agreed to accept Jewish immigrants. In 1937, the nation’s leader, Rafael Trujillo, had ordered his soldiers to massacre thousands of Haitians at the Dominican border. Historians believe he hoped that accepting Jewish refugees might repair his image internationally. He also hoped that Jews would marry local inhabitants and “lighten” the population. He granted visas to a thousand Jews who were to live in Sosúa, a special community established for them.

    the dominician republic's reasoning

Should we allow a larger number of Jewish exiles from Germany to come to the United States to live? (survey question taken in November, 1938)
    Yes: 23%

    No: 69%

No opinion or don’t know: 9%

kinda crazy how this exact same phenomena exists now makes you wonder if ukraine still had retained its jewish population to the same extent it used to how european opinions on refugees would differ

It wasn’t an intervention though the intervention part was just because the state committing the Holocaust was defeated. Meanwhile back at home we were putting Japanese people in war camps which doesn’t help the humanitarian angle

It just doesn’t fit as an angle for what you’re comparing it to, the action and result of WW2 won’t ever be comparable to a NATO intervention regardless of what the other state is doing
