@frolein I've been reading The Long Twentieth Century and it's good, but why does Arrighi never talk about France? It's kind of strange how little mention they get
idk but the book in general tends to skip over a lot of things since it's relatively kinda short Michel Beaud is French so they more time in his book iirc. Also less heady than Arrighi so it would be a good breather after you finish TLTC
why is immigration (or a constantly increasing labour force) necessary to prevent the rate of profit from falling?
Look, Nixon might have come up as a corrupt McCarthyite cold warrior, got into office off the Southern Strategy, sabotaged the Vietnam peace talks then bombed Cambodia, armed Pakistan during the Bangladesh Liberation War, overthrew Allende and Torres, armed Israel during the Yom Kippur War, lifted sanctions on Apartheid South Africa, doubled down on Operations Gladio/Chaos/Cointelpro/Condor, started the War on D**** and began the petrodollar system...
but the EPA and détente balance it out IMO
why is immigration (or a constantly increasing labour force) necessary to prevent the rate of profit from falling?
A larger work force means a larger amount of revenue from labor.
A larger workforce also means a larger amount of exploitation.
While proportionately people are still getting f***ed over, it adds up
why is immigration (or a constantly increasing labour force) necessary to prevent the rate of profit from falling?
The tendency of the rate of profit is partly the result of technological advances leading to capital investment coming more in the form of constant capital that doesn't create value (tools etc) instead of variable capital which does create value: labor. That means to counter the rate of profit falling, you invest relatively more into labor than constant capital. This can be done by expanding the labor pool through immigration, but also through imperialism.

This is why it's so funny when people talk say but what about automation?? Marx failed to consider!!! When automation is probably the best reason to see that capitalism is inevitably gonna end
Well either that or we all get melted into biofuel or something

Profit ultimately stems from (human) workers. Machines alone cannot truly create profit (they can just amplify the labor power of a human). The more advanced the economy gets, the more upkeep is needed for the machines and the higher the barrier of entry for machinery is to be competitive (the upkeep of machines is not profitable). So one way to offset it is by making workers work longer, or by making them work harder, or by having more of them.

Automation is the core reason for the profit rates to steadily fall and Marx predicted that 150 years ago

Rate of profit falling one of most powerful Marxoid theories

Also a big explanation for imperialist expansion and having to spread democracy and freedom around the world

I don't really get how that would work in anything except vague aesthetics, baathism only works as a concept if the party already controls the state and has a direct relationship to the wider population as a result. i wonder if he knew that and wanted to LARP anyway or if he just wanted to sound cool and LARP lol

It seems the group moved away from the concept later on, IDK the details but it was funny to read
