    Fourier and Proudhon were literally trying to formulate ethical socialism and it was just utopian nonsense

    Any way to summarize what they said? or is it too complex to be brief about

    these were contemporary/pre-marx/engels socialists basically, in the wave of utopian socialism that existed but largely predated what we now understand as the main historical development of it. other people included Leroux & Saint-Simon

    basic idea was;

    Leroux/Saint-Simon - (mainly Saint Simon) very basic similarities of general socialism but w/o critique of "capitalism" and more of a moral critique of government and industry. believed in meritocracy and was against aristocracy and believed his political formulation would enable meritocracy which was the most ethical system. marx called him a utopian. think of Leroux as being as early "left populist" basically. Leroux was more schizo and had a similar Hegelian background as marx but wrote about socialism from the perspective of religious/spiritual fulfillment and cared more about philosophical implications. they knew and cross-influenced each other but neither were influential

    Fourier - you probably know him because he had that "phalanxes" and "organized communities" idea with weird cult styles of living and social interactions and tried building proto-utopian cult communities as a socialist experiment. Fourier was ironically more influential and was mentioned (not necessarily positively, but referentially) by some frankfurt school writers. influenced a lot of later writers esp. in regards to more anarchist leaning leftists (lol). basically didn't as much care about material conditions but rather cared very specifically about how material conditions enabled things like racism and sexism and cared about the ability of the community to enable the individual to experience pleasure or something. pretty sure he also coined the term "new world order". also really hated jews!

    Proudhon - considered the first or among the first "anarchist". basically largely known for mutualism and hatred of anything which impeded on the individual, all the way down to group sovereignity. considered himself a socialist too since he believed in social ownership. had pretty all over the place views but similarly basically only cared about material conditions insofar as their effect on the individual and thus the moral implications of such. ironically ended up influencing a few right wing people down the line much like Sorel. also hated jews and women!

    Idk if socialism needs to be spiritual, what does he mean by that really? I haven't heard him say that word for word but i feel like it's just a way of saying socialism should end alienation. I've also heard him talk about the lack of true selflessness under capitalism (especially in the west) and how revolution takes a huge amount of selflessness and genuine heroism and sacrifice, and how transforming people's consciousness would be necessary or something along those lines, which reminds me a lot of what Che said in that essay about individual consciousness and becoming the new man

    That essay is a must read btw

    https://www.marxists.org/archive/guevara/1965/03/man-socialism.htm

    Yeah that’s basically what he means. I’ve also heard him state very plainly as follows:

    “ Socialism doesn’t happen because people get “better”. Socialism happens because people change their self-perception to align their self-interest with a greater interest. That’s class consciousness. It IS a self-interested movement. It is directed towards protecting one’s self from the pain the misery of life. It is an adaptive and evolutionary move. People are put into a position of friction where they either have to fight or cooperate. And they get in a situation where more of them come to the conclusion that cooperate makes more sense than fight. Then that builds new incentive structures that redefine what people are capable of - what really is a possibility in the world.”

    "Akin to the methods employed during the height of the Cold War, necessary direct interventions include prohibiting organizations from being part of the private and public sector if they are found to be aligned with anti-NATO regional and global powers. On the more severe side of the spectrum, replacement of governance to ensure continuity and amelioration in the quality of life of one’s citizens and the place for the country within the Atlantic alliance itself.
