    SEGA GOON

Another Chinese girl wrote me this:

The teacher said that Mao Zedong revised Marxism and Leninism. He believed that the superstructure acted against the foundation of the economy, and he believed in the power of the people. As for why the revolutionaries reformed the superstructure when the economic foundation was inadequate, it was probably because they were revolutionaries. They were in the concrete environment of historical view, and they must properly revise their theories to achieve the revolutionary purpose. There is a gap between theory and practice.

I am now more and more wary of those revolutionaries who advocate happiness for the people in the name of revolution. The loftier their revolutionary ideals, the more likely the ordinary people will suffer. Now I do not believe in any doctrine, only believe in humanity and speak of humanity.

The economic base determines the superstructure. What I don't understand is why there hasn't been a socialist revolution in the United States and Germany, where capitalism is highly developed. Is it that capitalism has not reached a certain stage yet? Or have they improved capitalism through moderate state intervention in the economy, thus avoiding its periodic economic crises?

    wait how's this one wrong

they said that the cultural revolution was a mistake because it was trying to develop socialism through the superstructure against the base, and then asked a pretty decent question that most older marxists would also ask about the US not "evolving" into socialism eventually

I didn't say it was bad and I gave her a proper response

    reject the extremist/moderate dichotomy
embrace being correct and your enemies being ontologically evil

So what’s really gonna happen with all these rising rents, inflation, layoffs, etc

Rents- continue rising until supply of housing is increased one way or another

Mortgages- similar to rents however could fall when interest rates are increased, then fall as the elderly die off

Layoffs- haven't hit their biggest incresse yet

Inflation- multifactorial. When the fed raises rates, it will slow down as borrowing is more expensive and less money is in circulation
This will likely lead to a recession due to the ensuing reduction in aggregate demand. However some inflation will remain on the supply side due to supply chain and natural gas (thanks Putin)
When alternatives are developed and the supply chain is fixed, inflation will return to normal or maybe even go deflationary for a while

The supply of housing will not be increased as real estate companies continue buying housing on speculation since they have far more financial power than any actual consumers

Highly recommend this first hand documentary series on life during the Cultural Revolution. Think there’s like ten parts iirc, you can watch them in any order based on what interests you. My favorite is the Generator Factory

F*** zoning laws man. Yimbyism is the way

YIMBYism is a simplification of the housing market which presumes that housing prices are simply reflective of "supply and demand", but this isnt true. i do agree that more densification is needed (especially in NA) but "build more towers bro" isn't a clear solution to affordability. a more multifaceted approach based around tenant and working class organization at the grassroots is needed

the contradiction of housing could not be any clearer. the affordability crisis is a direct and obvious result of the commodification of housing. by this token,
building more market rate, for profit housing without any other course of action (like YIMBYs propose) is not going to make a substantial difference in terms of affordability, especially for low-income renters. YIMBYs are fine with and even advocate for the displacement of renters and the gentrification of areas so long as they can have a nice 1BR with some cafes and breweries down the street lol.

"we can make housing more affordable by partnering with private capital" is funny to me. affordability is directly opposed to the material interests of developers, which is why its ridiculous IMO to act like for-profit developers are somehow gonna be the ones who spearhead a solution to the housing crisis.
