This time last year, Zhang Bangxin of TAL Education was worth $13.3 billion. Today, his wealth has plummeted 94 percent, and he is worth $890 million. Likewise, Larry Xiangdong Chen, founder of industry rival GSX Techedu, lost $15 billion in just six months between January and July last year, and is now worth a reported $235 million.
This dramatic fall in wealth was the result of a Chinese government crackdown on the country’s after-school tutoring industry, which it accused of causing unnecessary stress to young children. In July, Beijing upended one of the country’s most lucrative sectors as it announced a sweeping ban on for-profit classes run by tutoring institutes on academic subjects like mathematics, English, and science.
Billionaires falling afoul of Chinese regulators is no accident, and has come as President Xi Xinping has spoken publicly in recent months of curbing “excessive” wealth in China in pursuit of “common prosperity.” Besides the education sector, internet companies have also found themselves in regulatory crosshairs, with online retail giant Alibaba handed a $3.7 billion fine in April last year for monopolistic practices."

Great discussion, never heard of Vivek before but he makes a lot of sense.
I do agree with him that Western Marxists kind of have overestimated the role of ideology as a cause of preventing collective action and underestimate the individualist material incentives against collective action in the class structure itself.

i mean i know what the reason is really but i wish in western leftist circles it wasn't so taboo to talk about the contrast of social norms and material incentives. the only people who do this at this point are either schizos like Aimee or like people on twitter who's belief system is just hating liberals and saying "i'm a leftist but i hate the left!" over and over

What exactly do you mean by the contrasts of social norms and material incentives?
it's like how what people themselves can interpret (whether actively or latently) as incentives, behaviors, or predicted outcomes within their own lives can largely be connected to what environmental/societal values they individualize and thus how they can interpret what conditions return what prospects. so in more practical terms it can be how the view of a social/material dialectic is skewed in interpretation based on what pre-existing ideas exist in the people conceptualizing it (again actively or unconsciously)

it's more like the conditions that effect how people can begin to even interpret ideology or interact on mutual grounds. like you wouldn't say someone's definition of a concrete term like "what is a road" is an ideology, but what people think about what a "road" is diverges; it's going to be different if someone grew up in a rural area w/ dirt roads vs if they grew up in a city with paved avenues for example. i'm saying that type of latent differentiation happens on virtually everything and isn't intrinsically ideological per-se but is meaningful to discuss

Oh, to be clear I don't think people like Aimee bring this stuff up in good faith or anything - i don't even think they really hit this stuff on the head on purpose, it's just schizo rambling which gets pushed into deconstructionism which then inherently gets back to this.
I think the issue with how many leftists approach socialization is that it's approached in a manner of either condescension (often assuming their socialization is superior and must be evangelized - defeating the purpose of their actual goals otherwise) or in a way just attached to academic/book club theoreticals rather than anything related to praxis (or at least self-reflection). I think the point is that socialization isn't solely ideologically influential, it does actually effect the ability to understand what material conditions are or would be, and most discussion about this just comes down to arbitrary social debates rather than extrapolation of this into any wider forms of action or meaning - Apr 9, 2022·1 reply

I dunno, I can see how textually it is but I think it's because I just lack the vocabulary to differentiate it myself. Like I more mean of how people define concrete things and the scope of what they can think in light of that, which I don't think is ideological inherently, but it is in a dialectic sense because you can't really separate the two.
