Orangutanis there still varying levels of compensation for varying difficulties of work? genuine question btw.
To each according to their ability. To each according to their need. Basically all workers will be giving their full labor value however a construction worker with 3 kids isn’t gonna be making the same as a single college kid.

americanaThe most basic idea of socialism is that workers are also the owners of their labor and the products of their labor. From there you can get into a bunch of ideas of how you want this idea to be expressed and how to reach said idea

You own the product you produce. Some people will obviously produce more value than others there’s no problem with that. And socialism doesn’t aim to make everyone take the same amount of what is produced overall. There will be that discrepancy and it should be allowed to remain but stable relationships between higher and lower money makers must remain
The big issue socialism tackles is the difference in class created by capitalism

does that not kill motivation for people to pursue more difficult careers? or is there still a sense of "valuable labor -> higher compensation"

Not necessarily. A worker co-op isn’t socialism either when profit motive still exists
For socialism to remain stable there must be a major change made in how commerce and economics functions in regards to business structure and market dynamics
