Anti-MENA sentiment is like hardwired into the minds of the west to a hyper-ignorant extent. Like a lot of people think 9/11 was what started the rise of anti-islamic fearmongering and the west but this isn't true, as if classic family movies like Back To The Future didn't depict Libyan Muslims as bloodthirsty mindless terrorists way before 9/11 was even a thought. Anti-MENA and thus anti-muslim sentiment in the west goes back to like at least WW1 in terms of open rhetoric (at least in the US), and obviously post-colonial attitudes for the rest of Europe otherwise. Anti-MENA & anti-islamic rhetoric is so deeply embedded in western conscious that even when movements rise up claiming to support Islam or North Africa (i.e. Nation of Islam), they're built on just inverting the same ignorance to contrary support of a fabrication. While this is obviously primarily an anti-islamic rhetoric, this same hostile exoticism really comes forward in a manner applicable to virtually all non-christian africans. Arab & African Jews face the same ignorant fabrication and hostile exoticism for example (especially by western jews). Unlike Asia & India under which in much of the western mind their "exotic" cultures have lead to hyper-fetishization, MENA culture(s) have always been on the chopping block of orientalism as a dehumanization rather than as a curiosity. I've always found this ironic because of how much the US really owes to Islam indirectly - not even talking about the Quran studies by famous founders of the country but that Morocco was the first country to ever recognize them post-Revolutionary War and how much of early development of the US can be traced through mutual relations with MENA Kingdoms like Morcco. But of course most americans live in a fabricated ignorance where they build their own histories and pick and choose their friends and enemies fed to them by the media like it's a video game and not real people with real lives and experiences
