Transcript of statement given by OTU at todays press conference with OTU and their legal counsel:

It is very fitting that we are gathered here today on May 1st, May Day. Many of you may not know, but across the world May Day is also known as International Workers Day, or the “the real Labor Day”. May Day represents a time for workers across the world to celebrate our shared resistance to exploitation in all forms and build solidarity in this fight. OTU sees itself as a part of this rich tradition of working class resistance. For us, we are but a small part of a larger fight for a more economically just world - one which affords dignity and respect to the workers and tenants whose labor allows our society to function, instead of one which robs and exploits the man so that the wealthy few can live lives of extreme luxury and comfort

Because we view OTU as part of a struggle that is bigger than ourselves, we are motivated solely by an immense love of the people. To think that we would ever try to lead tenants astray or misrepresent ourselves to them is completely absurd when you understand our motivations. We have never accepted a penny in compensation for the hours of organizing work we do each week, and have no paid staff. As an organization by and for tenants, our compensation comes solely in the form of our firm belief that a victory for tenants one place is a victory for tenants everywhere.

We ask everyone here, where are these accusations of UPL coming from? Are they coming from any of the tenants who we have helped collectively put tens of thousands of back into the pockets of over the last 7 years? Are they coming from any of the tenants who have had their hot water restored and dangerous repairs addressed after months of neglect because they chose to organize with OTU and fight back against their landlords for what they are owed? No. They come solely from the landlord lobby. The landlord lobby wants to destroy OTU and organized tenants, because their business model relies on reducing services to a minimum, while raising rents to the maximum - and it is only OTU who stands in the way of this. To illustrate this point in very stark terms, 2021 Census data shows that at a given apartment complex, a landlord puts an average of 4 hours of work into repairs and maintenance, while simultaneously extracting $25,000 per month in rent from those same complexes.

But things in Omaha are even worse - as Omaha in particular is a city in which landlords are allowed to run rampant. 10 years ago the landlord lobby - represented by MOPOA - sued the City, and succeeded in making code enforcement effectively meaningless via the 2015 Consent Decree, eliminating one of the few conventional means by which landlords could be held accountable to uphold the most basic of living standards. In 2020, despite there being a nominal eviction moratorium due to COVID-19, evictions continued to be rubber stamped in Omaha. In fact, tenants were not even informed of the moratorium prior to presenting in eviction court, yet were expected to be responsible for asserting it if they wanted to avoid eviction. OTU had to spend countless hours at the courthouse in the midst of a pandemic just to halt a fraction of these evictions by informing tenants of their rights as they got into the courthouse. And here we are again in 2025, with the landlord class waging yet another brutal assault on the only thing left that stands in their way - OTU and organized tenants. It is no coincidence that this attack comes on the heels of our successful establishment of Nebraskas first tenant unions. Apparently landlords believe that it is only they who have the right to be organized! Despite landlords having many times the funds, power, professional associations, and political connections that tenants do, they cannot stand the thought that tenants are beginning to build even the least bit of the power they have. This is because they know that tenants growing more conscious, and choosing to come together to use their collective power in the form of tenants unions represents a very real threat to the misanthropic way that they do business

If the UPL commission wishes to avoid defiling both its reputation, and the rule of law, it will drop this investigation immediately, and provide us with transparency regarding the landlord lobby and its agents role in these proceedings up to now. For the UPL committee to have allowed themselves to be weaponized by the landlord lobby in this way is an utter disgrace. The UPL Commission is supposed to be an impartial body for protecting the vulnerable from swindlers who seek to take advantage of them. Now, this has been flipped on its head, with the UPL Commission being used to attempt to serve the biggest swindlers of them all. It is deeply concerning that Tara Holterhaus - who boasts at the Nebraska Legislature about how she files “200 evictions a month” - is a member of this committee - an explicitly adverse party who we are nonetheless expected in part to answer to. Our requests for documentation demonstrating what exactly these charges are based upon, and whether Ms Holterhaus recused herself from the proceedings that lead to this decision have been refused. Thus we are fighting blindfolded and with a hand tied behind our back.

But despite what we are up against, we are not in the least bit afraid. Quite the opposite, we are emboldened! As we say, it is good to be attacked by the enemy. This attack proves to us that OTUs method of organizing works, and that it has the power to balance the scales, and secure for tenants dignity and control over their lives - something the landlord lobby cannot allow to happen. Landlords, oftentimes too afraid to even sit down with their tenants to discuss their righteous demands only know how to fight behind closed doors and with an army of lawyers by their side, where they don’t have to face the human consequences of the exploitative relationship that makes them rich. It is only the landlords who are afraid. OTU always knew that a day like this would come if we were organizing correctly, and this attack only vindicates the fact that we have chosen the most effective course of action to take back power from landlords, and place it in the hands of tenants. The landlord lobby thought we would be intimidated by these measures, and simply sign away both OTUs existence, and Nebraska tenants rights to organize. Unfortunately for them, they made a serious miscalculation. We intend to to fight this by any means necessary, and take it to the highest levels we have to. While we have the utmost confidence we will prevail, the outcome of this is ultimately irrelevant. The antagonism between tenants and landlords will remain, and win or lose, after this we intend to fight more intensely than ever, and make landlords lives harder than ever, just as they seem hellbent on making the lives of tenants harder than ever. We have no doubt that whatever the outcome, OTU and tenants across Nebraska will only grow in strength and come out more powerful than ever before.
