As a follow up from our previous post, we are proud to announce that on 2/15/25, the tenants of the Drake Court Apartments – owned by HD Omaha – voted to unionize, forming the Drake Court Tenants Union, Local #252 of Omaha Tenants United.
Over the past few months, HD Omaha forced nearly every one of their tenants onto month to month leases, and jacked rents by as much as $400. Without being granted long term leases, the tenants of Drake Court have been forced into an extremely precarious living situation. Simultaneously, HD Omaha followed the classic gentrifier playbook of reducing existing services to an absolute minimum. The courtyard tenants used to socialize in was destroyed and replaced with a dog park. The large oak trees the tenants adored were ripped up, with the large lawn they once occupied being separated from the property and put up for sale for $750,000. Tenants were forced to drive to shipping centers to pick up packages and vital medications, as HD allowed the mailroom to fall into disrepair and become inaccessible to mail services – a clear violation of federal law. Furthermore, HD fenced off the property and put up gates to the courtyard. This hostile architecture was not only inconvenient, but by making it so tenants did not have a way to unlock the gate from their units, it created a dangerous barrier for emergency services to be able to assist tenants. HD Omaha seems to think that the fewer services they provide, and the less they put into the property, the more they should be able to rob their tenants. This is the twisted, cynical logic of the gentrifier. It is clear that HD intends to try and force tenants out in hopes of either attracting wealthier tenants, or pursuing a “pump and dump” scheme to artificially inflate the value of the property prior to sale.
After submitting their demands on 3/2/25, DCTU hosted a press conference on the lawn that HD is attempting to parcel off and take away from them. After sharing their stories and announcing the union, the reclaimed the lawn for themselves, planting a new oak tree in place of the one HD Omaha had so callously destroyed. This was not just a symbolic measure, but a real expression of working class militancy. By expropriating the lawn and taking it back under their control, the tenants showed who has the real power, and provided a vision for a better future free from the cruel domination of capital. We hope that one day, the whole world is made to look like the lawn of Drake Court.
HD Omaha’s misanthropic cost cutting and psychological warfare is something tenants across Omaha are all too familiar with. For years, our local government has allowed development companies to tear up our communities, displace working class tenants farther and farther from the city center, and jack up rents with impunity. This process can be described as nothing short of a systematic assault on working class people in Omaha – an assault that has been promoted by our elected officials, who have gleefully allowed themselves to be completely bought off by landlords and development companies. If we want to put a stop to the forces that have destroyed so many working class lives, we have to fight back. DCTU is on the front lines of this fight, and is determined to show that another way is possible by every means at our disposal. We invite all tenants across Omaha to get together, get organized, and start forming tenant unions to stand up to the landlords and the gentrifiers. Only by fighting back and taking our class enemies on directly can we create an Omaha that is beholden to the masses, instead of the interests of real estate capital. Be on the lookout for ways that you can support DCTU and fight to build a better Omaha! We truly have a world to win.

I'm not as doomer on the reality on the ground in the US because with everything happening we're seeing a lot of change very fast. I think there's lots to do and lots of organizations popping up
its crazy how labor movements get 0 credit and people praise "FDR" for change
FDR is also under-credited for how badly the New Deal completely sabotaged the trajectory of American economics. FDR and Nixon are basically near solely responsible for the entirety of modern US economic paradigm. People say it’s Reagan but that’s not really true. Actual real economic mechanisms like how the govt wields debt or manipulates currency relative to global markets come from those two. 2008 subprime crisis (and the current upcoming one) as well as consumer credit reliance all wouldn’t have happened w/o Nixon (which in turn wouldn’t have been possible w/o New Deal infrastructure)

I was thinking about how people post these xi jinping "do nothing and win" memes and how people in general always try to look for a powerful person to fix whatever issue there is in the world. All of the FDR did this. Bernie did that. Stalin did this and that. All plays into that narrative. Which distracts from the reality that people simply wielded enough power for their interests to be considered.
