the CDR helped protect cuban sovereignty from becoming an american puppet again, 90% of people living in poverty has largely due to collapse of the ussr and embargo from america which any small nation would have trouble with, the wars that cuban were sent to were against colonial regimes in africa and these war were popular with cubans as an example of living up to anti colonial internationalism inherited from the revolution

Allying with the USSR was highly positive. It enabled them resources to build stuff and feed the population. After the USSR got dissolved is when stuff really got bad.
