i'd recommend The God That Failed to everyone in the thread who hasn't already read it, really interesting compilation of essays even outside of Wright's contributions

Following his contribution to the anti-communist anthology The God That Failed (1949), Silone joined the Congress of Cultural Freedom and edited Tempo Presente together with Nicola Chiaromonte.6 In 1967, with the discovery that the journal received secret funds from the United States Central Intelligence Agency, Silone resigned and devoted all his energies to writing novels and autobiographical essays
    every f***ing time

definitely some interesting expression in this book even if the conclusions are often stupid.

i look at the book as more of a historical time piece than any piece of intrinsic philosophy or politics. Wright's essay specifically gives such an interesting look at the casual politics and culture of the time in a non-idealized perspective which I really appreciate. It's often hard to really find literature that just talks about raw experiences and observations without trying to make some grander point or subjecting itself to self-editorializing. The other essays in it are meh, I find Wright's essay specifically fascinating because it shows how almost every cultural battle and nuance we think is new to our time or borne of social media has existed since even before the 50s.

    Can you elaborate

The geography of Britain had two notable qualities that many other nations didn’t

    • It was the only major European power to be an island, thus sharing no land borders with another major power
    • It had the most coal deposits of any European power (the Germans had a lot too but they would not be a consolidated power until sixty years into the Industrial Revolution)

This had a significant effect upon the means by which the British could project and protect power.

    a. Their lack of land borders meant there was relatively little worry regarding political instability in Europe spilling over into the UK. The British Isles deadass ended up being the only place untouched by the Napoleonic Wars. I’d

    b. The emphasis on maritime travel and naval due to the nature of being an island translated well when building the colonial empire that the British had. The fact that the British Isles had a commanding position over the north coast of Europe was also a major factor in controlling other aspiring colonialists

    c. Major coal deposits combined with point A allowed for a quick industrialization of the Isles, widening a gap in homeland economic output

Essentially all of these coming together allowed for the British to apply a colonial system that wasn’t regularly threatened by instability because they were simply so able to consolidate and enforce power. The Spanish, French, Dutch, Portuguese, and German empires were all smaller, felled by local geopolitics of the host nation, or disestablished by colonial movements that couldn’t be successfully quashed

No i do know the geographic edge that England had (although I think people focus too much on that and not the social relations which allowed these things to be exploited) I'm more asking why you think colonization "crippled" European countries
