even in 2008 and further back than that, there was never really open discourse about what the literal purpose of the fed was. there may have been a few books no one really read post-lehman bros but widespread the attention was a lot more abstract. even occupy wallstreet was just about speculators and the 1% more than it was about structural protests.

with recent stuff like the interest rates/BPS hikes and the language used by the fed in turn, a lot of people are realizing like "wait, the purpose of the fed isn't to care about the financial safety of americans, it's to stabilize the economy completely separate from anyone's wellbeing??". like people thought for the longest time the point of the Fed as an institution was to influence the economy in a manner to benefit citizens of the country on a macro-level; this was never actually true, the point of the Fed was legitimately never to help anyone, it's to play a very specific game w/ eocnomic patterns according to an incredibly specific post-neolib (in the actual meaning of the word) economic philosophy. Like when the fed says they want to decimate people's savings accounts and raise unemployment and lower paychecks, it's not them being comically evil, that's LITERALLY just how the Fed works. It's a transparent admission of the paradigm of the economy is literally structured to work.
