I've been reading about WW1 and a lot of the arguments that ppl make about how economic integration between countries is a deterrent to war just falls apart, and there's no scenario where China buys out the U.S through some kind of Gorbachov/Yeltsin figure, but even if Mike Pompeo is elected president I can't imagine a nuclear war.

I still think the U.S and China get into some kind military conflict but idk, we'll see.

i'm referring less to china and more to russia - obviously china is a different story completely and i don't know if i'd mention it in the same breath as china is very pro-globalization, their ideas of polarity don't necessarily align with Russia, they're just anti-western globalization more than they are anti-globalization as a whole; but even then it's not fully true, as they do support western globalization when it benefits them.

i don't really want to fearmonger about russia more than need be, but putin's speeches have basically reflected he thinks of ukraine as a war against the west as a whole on an ideological basis, like literally a war against western post-liberal global ideology. i do think that the severity of the talks, while yes it has to be kept in context of russia's continued position in the war and putin's own standing relative to that, paint a kind of frightening picture about even if it's not him, the true extent of what conflict between ideological actors would look like. that and the fact the US has responded w/ the below, as i posted in the ukraine thread

Don’t know how I didn’t mention this earlier but this reminds me. When I was in London I talked to this Iranian expat for like 2 hours at this punk bar whose dad was an advisor to the Shah started taking cuz he was pissed off about the Ukraine situation and how it’s driving prices up

Shockingly he was a very interesting person and mostly had decent views on things for a rich person lol. Said he’s sympathetic to communism but doesn’t think it’s practical (classic)

But then he got on some weird s*** about race relations and LGBT stuff so I pulled out of the convo. At least he was vehemently anti NATO tho
