i haven't been able to understand the number of self proclaimed communists who are pro prostitution lately

i mean prostitution is a complicated issue but s***work is work, no reason to necessarily be "against" it

why would communists be against that?

    (Not all are)

    But in my opinion

I'm not anti-prostitutes' as people, I don't condemn them for what they do.

    But a few simple reasons

The history of prostitution is stemmed in colonialism and racism. The vast majority of prostitutes are extremely poor black women and the vast majority of johns are wealthy white men.

70% of prostitutes have mental illnesses, over 90% of prostitutes want to quit but are unable to.

The average age in which women become prostitutes is 15 years old.

Prostitution is full of violence and other issues a large number of street hookers die young

If prostitution was a great liberating thing for women like so many claim it wouldn't be almost entirely the most oppressed sections of society that become prostitutes

    Synopsis

i mean prostitution is a complicated issue but s***work is work, no reason to necessarily be "against" it

I tend to go by Marx's and Engel's stance which isn't anti prostitutes as people but as a job.

In the communist manifesto it states “It is self-evident that the abolition of the present system of production must bring with it the abolition of the community of women springing from that system, i.e., of prostitution both public and private.”

    —Marx and Engels, Communist Manifesto

"Take them back to productive work, bring them into the social economy." — Lenin on prostitutes

“To describe prostitution as s***work and a prostitute as a s***worker means to give legitimacy to sexual exploitation of helpless women and children. It means ignoring the basic factors, which push women and children into prostitution such as poverty, violence and inequalities. It tries to make the profession look dignified and as a ‘job like any other job’.”

    — The Communist Party of India (Maoist)

There is a lot of other examples struggle-sessions.com/2019/01/14/political-economy-and-prostitution did a really good job of writing about it.

I'm not saying that prostitutes should be punished but prostitution is inherently a byproduct of capitalism as almost no women would choose to be prostitutes.

Therefore in a truly classless society it would not exist

When you just look at the action women getting paid by men because of their body it sounds empowering to women.

But when you look at all the statistics behind prostitution it's an awful thing. Even when legalized it suffers from almost all of the same problems if not worse.

Again, I support prostitutes themselves but am against the system which creates it

i mean yeah i mostly agree but i think the language ppl use is off. we shouldn't put any focus on "abolishing prostitution" or the institution of s***work, but instead just alleviating the conditions that may lead to it. but in the meantime we can still tackle it as a workers rights issues and focus on things that are important to the workers in the industry
