Nobody gets cancelled. But his career did take a hit that year as they removed him from festivals and the Grammys that year. A big reason why he ain't get cancelled or was able to come back from it is because he went on an apology tour and got "racism therapy" or whatever it's called. Basically made the effort to show he was remorseful about the video.

I mean I don't give a damn about some white country singer, I wasn't listening to him before and nothing has changed that. But in the eyes of the public, he did the work to change, and that was enough.
