Listening to God bless your hustle RN, it's definitely a cool sound beats r on point and I feel the place that the lyrics are coming from. Only criticism I have is it sounds pretty derivative like sounds a lot like Earl an the lyrical content gets a lil redundant

This from 2017 tho I been sleep

He influenced Earl’s current flow, not the other way around. But it should be said that a lot of the Slums sound was prolly inspired by Earl back in the day

Mike def built on Earl's rap style... which tbh kinda makes it hard to say he had a bigger influence on Earl than the other way around, but when you factor in his production too Mike def had major impact on Earl too

Mach is also a very noticable influence on Earl's rapping on SRS for sure

They've acknowledged many times that Earl was a huge influence on their sound.

I think it was a Siifu interview where he mentioned that it was upon hearing Grief that they realised this was the sound they wanted. And recently I recall Medhane talking about the effect Solace had on them.

To me, any allegations of biting aren't well founded. Its always been collaborative in both directions.

Earl was on them well before they were really popping. He was living with Sage back in like '15. He bought MIKE's early tapes before MGBYH was a thing. He produced a track for Medhane off one of his first solo tapes. He produced for Mal Devisa early on.

Influence in both ways, collaboration in both ways. Nothing more and nothing malicious.

It would have been very easy for Earl to just bite their style without ever reaching out and trying to make inroads. Could have done the same with Mach's influence. But gotta give him credit for always taking the time to reach out and break into those spheres, when he didnt necessarily have to.

this. If you can still find links for those siifu + med interviews that'd be much appreciated sounds interesting and def like things they'd say but google didn't get me far

and also Earl really has amazing artistic integrity. He's long been saying he only does "features" or lets people feature on his songs when they've actually been hanging out and there's a personal connection/inspiration. You'd think that's overdoing it but his results speak for themselves tbh

    passionweiss.com/2020/04/23/pink-siifu-interview-2

    complex.com/pigeons-and-planes/2020/05/medhane-cold-water-interview

These 3 got plenty of talk about the nature of the relationships and Earl's influence.

Key part is this from the djbooth piece:

That sense of cohesion and inclusion stretches from brothers in lo-fi like MIKE and Mavi all the way up to Earl Sweatshirt, who Siifu credits with replacing the battery in his entire movement back with his 2015 single “Grief.”

“'Grief' set the tone for everything,” he says. “That s*** inspired sLUms, me, everybody to slow this s*** down and really have your thoughts in order. The reason that people say that Some Rap Songs sounds like other people’s work is because we’re all trying to slow it down and just speak truth. Thebe like 22 or 23. MIKE 20. Mavi 19. Columbia couldn’t say s*** because everyone been on the edge of their seat waiting for new Thebe s***. He made this s*** for the loop niggas on a major platform. He’s crashing this door so niggas can bum rush through this. He don’t have to do this, he could be on his Tyler s***, but he’s not. He's really for the people. That’s why he f*** with MIKE and Mavi so much. These niggas really livin' in they truth.”

yo big shoutout for coming thru!! These look great, excited to read through.

That quote really says a lot, might work that into my slums list on rym somewhere (tho I'd also need to find a good Earl quote about the slums influence to balance it off and not invite the "they bit Earl" dudes in..)

Jada used to be the way young and s***tily recorded dude on these old old King Krule rap tapes I used to listen to a lot in 2014, really came a long way.

Honestly waited quite long to decide to seriously put his name on the map. Kinda feel like we might have to thank slums/mike for his sudden striving tbh, or at least for providing a framework for him where he can be seen both as a competitor and OG. Back then I didn't think I'd have to watch out for this kid tbh, glad I got to rediscover him, starting to become quite a fan

Had Mavis project for a while but never really sat down with it. Had a wild hair to see if he had any videos the other day and used this thread title to find out about Mike. Only got his new project so is his old s*** better?
