Ost is still compressed and there are still fps drops unfortunately, but its definitely not unplayable and fps can be fixed

Nocturne hd remaster is a good start for sure since its coming soon and people say its the definitive smt experience, if not if you have a 3ds there's smt iv which is also a good start and the usual answer to your question.
The series shares some gameplay aspects with persona but there's no social sim and it has a way darker tone, so that can throw you off. Its also a lot more difficult
