There’s something about this movie and especially the ending that keeps on haunting me for some reason.

I wanna hear everyone’s opinion on the door being half opened. I heard some good points from some on here.

This film was so layered with its meaning. Frank was truly a flawed human to his core, had no self reflection until he was 80+ wow.

Also noticed, unlike Goodfellas, Scorsese chose not to dive into Frank’s childhood. We only get to hear his tales as a young man when he had already killed in war all the way up till he’s 83.

Does anyone think Frank believed in God or was the entire last act a plea to hang on to something, anything at all so he could be someone and feel somewhat comforted in his last days.

Also, the first time he says “I started painting houses myself” they quickly show the cut from Hoffa’s murder from behind his ear which is where Frank shot him, twice. Didn’t realize that until my second watch and I’m sure it’s because it’s his most personal murder.

i feel like that ending was him saying he still dont believe its all over yet. he didnt want to believe it. hoffa presumably did that throughout his life because he aint trust frank or anyone and slept with one eye open. so im guessing frank took up the habit and never realized that it wasnt necessary anymore smmhh

added to the fact that he didnt wanna be cremated because its "too final" like nigga gon come back from the dead. he didnt really want it to end. he wanted a chance. which is the other meaning im thinking about. maybe he left the door open cause he was waiting for his kids during christmas time. all i know is that ending was sad as hell

The last hour or so of the film is so amazing and so sad. A lot of interesting stuff about inevitability/free will and finality in this movie that I keep thinking about.

The part where Frank is picking out how he wants to be buried mirrors the door being left open. He's afraid of finality because he knows what he's done is wrong, but I also think that he believes a lot of what happened was inevitable and ultimately out of his control.

the final hour really justifies the run time, just watching Frank as a sad husk of a man trying to salvage the one relationship he has with someone that's alive is heartbreaking.
