There's a void in my heart rn
I remember when I was probably 8 or 9, my uncle picked me up from school and was playing Voodoo in the car - I absolutely loved it and I ripped it from a library CD lol. Fast forward several years, and 15 year old me put Untitled on a playlist for one of my crushes. I was telling my buddy about it and he burst out laughing bc my little white/hispanic ass was about to give a girl a f***ing D'Angelo s***anthem on a mixtape thinking absolutely nothing of it
I'll never forget when Black Messiah surprise dropped as well, and I was losing my s*** and none of my white friends at college knew who he was. Because Ferguson was happening not far away, it ended up being a moment of conversation and opened a lot of folks I care deeply about to the context of the album and his work's intersection with race. One of those things... you grow up in cities and with black folks daily, you never realize until you get older and leave how many people that look like you just never engage with black culture. But D'Angelo's music is undeniable, and I will always credit him with some of the most powerful music to soundtrack that time. Some of those folks texted me today shocked he passed.
Life is short, man. Art really weaves through memories and educates and helps us grow. Forever grateful for artists like D'Angelo and their stories that we've been lucky enough to have heard.
Real
Shaken to the core right now
RIP to one of the absolute greatest musicians ever
All three of his albums are classics and Voodoo and Black Messiah are both masterpieces of the highest order
RIP legend

Damn even Brown Sugar has aged gracefully, not many can make music like this

A holistic talent, truly. It feels like losing Prince again, he was that level with his production and artistic control. It's a shame that he had to experience all that he did in the aftermath of Voodoo, but I'm really grateful he got to receive his flowers this past decade post Black Messiah
I remember that thread so vividly. When we finally got it I remember just turning off all the lights in my apartment, firing one up, and letting the album just wash over me. Truly a mind blowing experience.
Great times
