They've been complicit and have likely been willing to overlook this for years though. Ratner is their long time collaborator on Rush Hour and that continuity was prob the main thing that'd ever bring them back. They've know the potential for #4 for a long time.

The leverage they utilized was likely getting a massive salary in order to sign on. Chan isn't passionate about this franchise and wants late career moments and Tucker hasn't had a big role since 3. Its a desperate film all around
