Yeah? Olivia Rodrigo took a rock song to #1 by ripping off Paramore, not MGK.

We've all been listening to the same s***. Just takes the label executives a little longer to catch on.

that’s fantastic but TTMD dropped September 2020 before Olivia was even an act don’t nitpick

not at all what i’m saying merely pointing out that you’re wrong about the mgk thing. rock influence has shown throughout his career and the last song on his 2019 album was a great segue into the sound he’s doing now

Then what are you saying? Because I heard a ton of rapper punk rock projects before MGK's. His just happened to pop off and that's great but he didn't start a zeitgeist or anything. At best he made some record execs turn their heads.

also not trying to cape for some white boy who makes pretty generic pop punk in an artist about black artist reclaiming the wrong sound. just don’t understand why your personal bias against an artist is skewing your perception of reality

just that i think it’s a bit unfair to call him a follower when it’s clear that influence has always been there. if i’m not mistaken he met travis barker pretty early in his career too. see my previous post though

edit: and that’s a good thing i’d say. if labels turn their heads it makes way for more artist who are of similar sound more likely to really pop

I didn't know when he met up with Travis Barker so if that's true and the sound has always been there mb, not trying to be a hater

I was just trying to place that specific album into a larger turn towards punk that I've been hearing for a minute.

Travis Barker definitely gets around the rap world. Just this year he dropped a project with Trippie and I saw him drum for Run the Jewels at a festival a couple years ago.

Bad Brains and Suicidal Tendencies (Thundercat!) in particular laid the groundwork for the crossover between genres, now they get covered all the time.

Travis worked with XXX. Mgk, Trippie, he did that new willow song. He has a project with Uno! He did the Nirvana tribute last year with post. He’s been working a lot with kennyhoopla and jxdn (not a fan of this kid tbh) but he’s been super active with young artists it’s tight

I think my only issue with this new wave of pop punk is that it sounds just like it used to, doesn’t feel like there has been much innovation

Rock is in a super interesting place in the underground. Experimental post-punk has been blending with jazz to make some of the year's most acclaimed albums. These bands know they're in niche territory and aren't trying desperately to be relevant. It's the only way for rock to be creative again.

I know that Kendrick was a big influence on Bowie's last album. It would be interesting if he adopted some of those sounds and expanded on the jazz fusion influence further if he wants to make a rock album.

Some of the work by Irreversible Entanglements/Moor Mother, Fire!, Sons of Kemet, etc. seem ripe for a rock infusion with top tier rapping. That would be amazing.

OP i get u wanted to showcase this niche sound but u clearly hv no idea of what “rock” is. First of “rock” isnt a thing

Indie rock is still alive and well, it’s just evolved and includes more electronic sounds

Last i checked Tame impala, Men I trust, beach fossils, MGMT, the national, the marias, Beach House etc are all super popping bands

In the context of the overall cultural landscape / zeitgeist, rock very much doesn't have anywhere near the same prominence it had compared to its heyday in earlier decades (with the early/mid 2000s being the last time it really had a grasp on the mainstream at large). Yes, all of the aforementioned bands have noticeable followings and great to excellent material (and I'm a fan/have seen a good amount of them live multiple times as well), but they're not exactly making that much of a seismic impact on the music world wide-scale compared to their predecessors. That and adding electronic flourishes doesn't necessarily cut it when the music is still by-the-numbers most of the time (even if it's enjoyable nevertheless)
