Incest scene was pointless but Hollywood seems to love to throw those into movies that take place a long time ago
I’ve never seen Brave Heart but I think plot wise there are similarities to Gladiator
But yeah like you said not as many crowd pleasers.
The main protagonist here isn’t even set up as someone to root for either. They show him pillaging villages, enslaving people, & we find out his main goal isn’t even a shared sentiment by his mom
spends decades with a savage crew of raiders; "i would never kill a woman"

Forreal I was like wait a minute…
I'm taking First Reformed tbh but Mr Sting really needs to remove the stick from his ass and let people live. seen him write that "y'all can stop pretending to enjoy these films" paragraph half a dozen times
watched it again recently liked it a lil less idk why
Its just either mystic terror (VVitch) mystic suspense/thriller (lighthouse) or in this case mystic drama/action
Thats what I would say anyway
I like this description

To be fair he didn’t even know that about his mom. Also we talking about the same mother that tried to off HIM when he was just a child
And during the pillaging etc they made sure to zoom in on his sad face every time
he was 100% set up to root for. And rooting for him i surely did
Everybody else felt more evil

It was pointless but then again it was a very minor part of the film, and no actual on screen incest happened besides that kiss that our MC gets out of asap
Also i didn’t really believe anything the mother said, she looked f***ing crazy. Even did the evil antagonist laugh and everything

Is it really? Lighthouse is pure cosmic horror to me not rooted in mysticism

I’m just saying he wasn’t portrayed as a hero in the conventional sense or in the same vein as the movies mentioned Gladiator & Brave Heart

Oh true i didnt really follow yall initial convo like that but tbh in a lot of movies the person to root for isnt flawless by any means so

I agree the best written characters usually are
Movie was literally just ok. Nothing new or memorable. I just wasn't moved by anything that happened
Holy Mountain also dense with metaphor and allegory which is what makes it "artistic" whereas if it was just the shock value stuff it would be a forgotten exploitation movie or whatever. Eggers style usually a little more out there but this is pretty straightforward. only a little bit of weird viking ritual and mythology stuff might confuse you.
I love history, which is why I’m interested in this. The Norse mythology doesn’t bother me that much, I can stomach it.
Might watch.

I was rooting for him strictly for the feral element, dude started hulking out as soon as he saw his uncle, I wanted to see him follow through with the rage

Lmao nah bro this the best movie of the last 5 years according to some people in this thread
Robert eggers or Nicolas Widn Refn? I'm trying to see something
sample size for eggers is not that much really, and after watching the Pusher films I have a lil more appreciation for Refn overall, however watching this made me feel like Valhalla Rising was a bit of wasted potential given he had Mads

Refn but Eggers still needs a few years to beef up his filmog like @humey mentioned
Drive and Only God Forgives are goated
It’s flawed and not that bad. Looking forward to his Nosferatu feature
