in clothing, music, and visuals, you can see a clear, almost sudden difference in the direction people are taking it. most artists are all about "the vibe" and most have picked up a "psychedelic", d***ged out sound and imagery. you could say this way just the way the culture + scene was heading, but...
you could also blame it on one man.
A$AP Mob co-founder, A$AP Bari (real name Jabari Shelton)
based off this thread, the initial vlunting of a lot of artists would've taken place 2014-2016. there was a major sound / culture shift in the underground within those few years, which was basically spearheaded by a lot of artists even loosely connected to awge / a$ap.
it's easy to assume victims of the pcp bandito, such as carti, fauni, yatchy, da$h, uno, travis, ian connor, and of course sgp. but realistically, it could be countless rappers that have been ruined at the hands of Jabari Shelton. with A$AP having so many members ("vluntcarriers"), anybody associated with them could vlunt you at a moments notice. they pass you a honey berry wood, promising it's just the new VLONE Runtz...
PCP is known to have a profound effect on somebody's mental state, and can permanently alter the way you think and act. and think about it. if you were out of your mind on vlunts for years at this point, you probably would think recording a whole album with a baby voice was a good idea.
it seems like a lot of rappers / artists that associated with the Mob at one time don't anymore, and considering the attitude towards sexual allegations + convictions in the industry, i wouldn't be surprised if that wasn't a huge reason why. it does seem like some were able to escape the clutches of Bari, but some (carti, nast, rocky) are probably lost forever. they've been vlunted too hard, maybe even being some of the first people to be targeted.
while i wouldn't say the scene is over, or "ruined", i do think that it's naturally going to hit it's peak very soon (if it hasn't already). after that, bits and pieces will be re-appropriated for the next genre-shift. but many artists will be left behind, hanging onto what they can. i believe that if vlunts were never in the picture, music would be in a very different place right now and the underground scene would be thriving more than it is now. i really think they affected the current soundscape more than we see.
