From the jump, Hip hop has been about making the listener dance
What’s the common denominator of all the greatest hip hop tracks of all time? A hard ass beat that knocks. Rapping itself is about how the rapper “dances” around the beat.
The difference between success and failure of a rapper is beat selection.
If hov was rapping over trash beats, he wouldn’t have made it. Same goes for ye, nas, rocky, Carti, drake
I disagree a good rapper can make bad or middling beats good, a bad rapper will never make consistently good music
There’s a abundant abundance of good beats every beat has a remake and 10 similar variations, but captivating stories are slim , there’s hundreds of NY Drill rappers only one Pop Smoke only person with the same story to tell, glow up from from being scrubby kid getting roughhoused in the NYC public school system to a boss
I mean, look at Travis. He’s an awful rapper but he has good production. He’s one of the most successful rappers ever
He has a story, producer to rapper
Even him biting prime Young Thug and working with him at the same the was crazy
He has 4-5 stories going
Big Sean got that Cinderella rap story…rapping for your favorite rapper who then signs you… f*** you mean that’s an amazing story
Big Sean has no atm, I love finally famous but no
Any rapper with too many features has no story and depends on other rappers stories
French Montana gets the same beats but his story is weak (he actually has a good story but he doesn’t incorporate it or let it be known)

Not really, beats are important but they’re not everything
Hip hop music is about overall bounce imo and it consists of beat component and flow/cadence of rapping
The way cadence and flow of artist work with the bounce of the beat is the key to enjoyability of the song
It’s more about the story you’re telling, tbe plot , the narrative
Oliver Twist
EST Gee has a story to tell
Rx Nephew has a story to tell
Bladee has a story to tell
Durk has a story to tell
Drake has a helluva story to tell
Youngboy has a crazy life story to tell
Rod Wave has a Rocky story to tell
Carti has dramatic story to tell
Big Sean and Rocky have no story so people lose interest
How does big Sean not have a story? His whole career is a story
I’ll lock this thread if you tell me one artist with even a sliver of success without 3-4 stories theyre telling

I’d say it’s 60/40 with beats/delivery & cadence
Beats are the backbone of rap

Tbh I’m confused on what your definition of stories is
Tbh I’m confused on what your definition of stories is
Nigga is literally naming rappers that don't have s*** to say or tell
Tbh I’m confused on what your definition of stories is
Like College Dropout Kanye
Him and his frustrations with college
His frustrations with poverty in the black community
He had his story about not being respected as a producer
Him trying to make it as a rapper
Him being in Rocafekka and even rubbing shoulders with Jay
Him and his belief with Gods
There’s stories to captivate the listener

? Who EST Gee has the craziest story and it’s all real
The reason having beefs is so important to rappers is you create plot lines so people feel more personal and attached to the music

So you’re saying that a rappers backstory, perspective and struggles are the most important things in their music?
Idk i guess that’s an aspect but I’m certainly not listening to these rappers for their perspectives. A lot of these rappers’ “stories” (like Travis) aren’t even captivating at all

You listening to Travis for a story that’s your loss brother but I’m just say narratives are not only historically important but will get more and more important as competition more and lore stiff
I get what you’re saying people need to be invested into the rappers
Moneybagg Yo had local beef to generate interact from Gotti
Collaborated with Lil Baby
Had a mixtape with Youngboy
Beefed with Youngboy (all in one year)
Dated Meghan the Stalion to dating Ari
Also Pooh and 30 blowing up helped him too hus music is great but narratives matter

I’m not listening to Travis at all for his story. Nobody is, yet he’s wildly successful. thats my whole point. I can partially see where you’re coming from though. A lot more people are becoming fans of a rappers story over everything else, but I also think that’s because there’s not much to be desired with some rappers besides their backstory
Its about a variety of things simultaneously @op
