I think that’s what makes him one of the worst. It’s not that the music is so painfully unlistenable but it’s the fact he has never done a single thing in his life to progress the art form or challenge anyone. It’s literally the lowest common denominator of past sounds that’s been lightly touched up to sound as inoffensive as possible. Theres zero personality to any aspect of his art, from the raps to the beats to the album concepts.

Atleast with 6ix9ine or 645ar or these other trash artists, they’re doing something that’s atleast risky, as unlistenable as it is. I appreciate that more than j Cole any day

    This is an expert a***ysis

    i sure am

    They weren’t bad really

  • NoFace

because if we’re being completely honest, some belittle the overall genre

and i say that as someone that has genuinely seen it. lack of writing, lack of honing the craft, watering down vocal performances by masking with lazy autotune, lack of creativity, etc

some niggas dont even try to perform their records when recording, just have their engineers do the heavy lifting by punching in

I’m sure some do record like that but I bet they don’t have 13 number 1 albums and 10 platinum ones.

You're already making arbitrary rules. You're splitting a decade, ignoring guys who sold more, etc.

Kanye and Drake have huge asterisks by them, sorry

Nelly and DMX had way bigger moments than TI

Hip-hop is 50 years old dog

It’s past the point of needing every artist to burst on the scene and reinvent the genre

Kanye was the epitome of that and pretty much did everything that could be done sonically with the genre but a lot of “innovation” since has been reaching and aesthetics more than anything else

That’s why a lot of these new rappers ass, they “look” innovative/creative but they not bringing anything fresh to the table that has staying power with a larger audience.

People have grown to appreciate a rapper who just does the genre justice. It doesn’t have to be “innovative” in the same way that a modern Jazz musician doesn’t have to re-invent the genre itself to be appreciated. The principles of the genre have long been established.

There is nothing wrong with carrying on tradition. Nas was a big proponent of this (he even had a song called “Carry on Tradition”)

That’s what Cole represents, the classic lyricist archetype that can balance skill substance and commercial appeal

He doesn’t need to be anything more

And also we know you hate Drake and don’t want to give him any credit for his 15 years of rapping because of Quentin millers contribution to 3 songs

Not today fam I don’t feel like it lol

Sorry, nobody made Drake use 15 cowriters and try accents/styles on like clothes. Dig your grave, etc.

Ye and Drake are in the pop rap pantheon for sure. Right there with Trav

  • Uncs still trying to do the "cool kids like Drake" routine and he's been washed for a decade, public image in tatters, albums just came and went, clinging to streamer culture for relevancy

    Time to be objective

Aight man I told you I’m
Not doing this with you bruh lol

Matter fact before I start ignoring you I’ll just say this man Make Them Remember is as lyrical as anything anyone in the OP has done if thats not good enough for you lyrically you’re just being obtuse

Also Ye is a producer and a genius one of the greatest hip-hop artists who ever lived he knows how to make pop music yes but to write his entire run off as pop is corny and cringeworthy lol

I can sense your lack of melanin from across the net

Yeah I just completely disagree with this on every level. It’s the trend setters I respect. You’re right that just because you’re doing something different doesn’t make it good (literally used 6ix9ine and 645ar as examples), but I also have little to no respect for rappers doing absolutely nothing new like j Cole. Even Kendrick while I’m mixed on him and knowing he to some degree is also a big traditionalist, I know he has absolutely done new things for the genre such as how he’s progressed the storytelling of a concept album, how he modernized the 90s rap sound on TPAB, etc.

By comparison, J Cole is just boring and does nothing new. Nas can respect tradition but for his era, he was progressing the art in every way. Its his sound and he has every right to rely on it (frankly I ain’t moved much by his new music but I ain’t gonna hate because I know he’s made masterpieces that I will always go back to over his kings disease records, which btw still have better production than anything you’ll find on a Cole album).

  • Drake, alcohol, and minors the real big 3

  • shaleirose

    Flow - absolutely not

Rhymes - yes but that ties back into lyricism

    Subject matter - completely subjective?

Punchlines - ties back into lyricism

Wordplay - ties back into lyricism

And what is Future better at in your opinion
