Labels artificially inflating sales is a tale old as time. In the old days they would mass buy their own records, using intermediaries, or pushing large quantities through friendly retailers/distributors so the transactions looked like genuine demand. In eras with weaker auditing, those purchases or shipments could then contribute to chart positions or gold/platinum certifications even though ordinary consumers hadn’t bought all those copies.
