I don’t really care about this conversation but I hate this argument.

There was no internet. You were forced to listen to what the radio waves played. You don’t think that worked in the older artist's favor?

Labels bought albums to boost their artists.

Music game is music game. So that argument doesn’t work. Anything can be fudged or manipulated it’s not specific to a time period…this is a business at the end of the day.

At the end of the day, you can’t manipulate your way into being the most streamed artist of all time.

Drake’s streaming numbers are indicative of his undeniable hit making ability and listener retention.

Meh, Drake was big before all that existed but I get your point. Pretty much proves my point that there’s no difference between the two eras though.

I would even argue media back then had a bigger impact and control. Like you literally didn’t have a choice. There is no internet to stream your favorite artist. You literally had to listen to them older artists. No related tab, no searching for new artists from the convenience of your phone.

If radio said Smokey Robinson is hot, then that’s what you’re going to have to listen to.

And that’s another big misconception surrounding the validity of Drake’s commercial success.

Drake was selling physical units when musicians, specifically hip-hop artists were barely going gold. I think Take Care sold like 3.5 million records worldwide or something. Yes it pales in comparison to that of the hay day of the music industry but for the time period in which he was selling music, that is really impressive.

And he then did what any great artist does which is adapt with the times. In his case, his commercial ascension coincided with the proliferation of streaming consumption. He is now reaping the benefits of that Apple Music deal and embracing streaming.

Might be worth more today just because of recency but 20 years from now his catalog will not be worth more than MJ's lmao

Its like when Herman's Hermits outsold The Beatles Like okay yeah the infinite pool of teenage dingbats inflated their value at the time but nobody buying them decades later

What's telling is the inability to understand he is talking about streaming value for back catalogue. Also if anyone watched more clips of that part or the whole thing he also changes his statement from 70s 80s 90s to 60s 70s 80's.

The same way a bigger artist like Drake is spammed on every major playlist,
YouTube algorithm, TikTok, and IG algorithm. And we all know radio has loved Drake for the past decade.

There is way more fan programming in this era than any other era.

Even though they did have radio programming, fans still had to physically go to a store to buy music, that’s way more than paying $10 a month for all music and listening through your phone.

they know this they just conveniently leave out context to support their narrative

there’s been hundreds of threads that point this exact thing out to these morons thousands of times

    dumbass kids

I'm not understanding this gamma drake deal? Everything implies he co-owns it but why would it be such a big deal if it's just a label like every other rapper has?

Yes at first he said 70 80 90 then changed to 60 70 80. Talking about catalogue (any music older than 18 months) on streaming.
Simply stating Drake's streaming catalogue generates more revenue than those eras combined.
