word I have a friend who loves UFC but just doesn't get the appeal of pro wrestling lol one of the first things he asked me when I brought it up to him was "fans are in on it right?"...I've recommended him crazier, harder hitting matches to peep that have more of a sports feel (i.e. NJPW s*** and some AEW stuff) but he has no interest
I can actually understand where your friend is coming from, cause wrestling can get a lil too silly for its own good lol,and no matter how hard alot of wrestling tries,it'll never really resemble a fight. At the same time tho,you have to appreciate the theatrics and athleticism of todays wrestling and realize "yea, the fight isn't real, but what they are doing is very real".
I think alot of fight fans just can't process the act of actively not trying to hurt someone in wrestling vs someone actively trying to hurt someone in combat sports.

I just explain it as...yeah they're not trying to seriously injure each other but...that s*** still hurts...idc how much you work out in the gym catching a 200-400 pound dude even perfectly gonna have you sore the next day lol...chops really hurt, getting slammed on your back hurts...not to mention doing that s*** for 20-40 min sometimes...I agree it doesn't resemble a real fight but it's performance art just with a physical/combat aspect to it...I guess I get how it could be hard for someone to make that transition but I also feel like a lot of MMA fans were pro wrestling fans when they were younger considering how much UFC bites their aesthetic
like if you can watch a choreographed fight scene in a movie and dig it I don't get what's different about wrestling...if you can watch every villain give a speech before killing the main character instead of just killing them like would realistically happen I don't see why you can't enjoy wrestling lol I remember showing him the Wardlow and Hager MMA style match and he was like "the f*** are the rules for this?"

Alot of MMA dudes come off as people who watched wrestling thinking it was 100% real, discovered it wasn't,it were scorned ever since lol. But yea,I think MMA gained that old school Attitude Era,beer drinking, sloppy drunk audience from wrestling a long time ago(or at least a good chunk of them).

I also feel like WWE dominating and controlling the narrative for so long that their sports entertainment is the only type of pro wrestling there is and bc over the last decade or so they've been marketed as a more kid friendly show that probably doesn't help the case for the entire industry...pre determined or not idk how someone watches Omega/Ospreay or Omega/Okada not to mention numerous other matches and doesn't walk away with their mind blown...wrestling's always been a variety show so you gotta throw in the silly s*** most the time (I know there's exceptions)

That too,WWE likes to pin itself up as the NFL of wrestling, when thats kinda not true, but it kinda is. They don't swallow up every other organization thats in front of it(they try hard as tho)like NFL does XFL/USFL(as in,that XFL/USFL are so microscopically tiny on NFL's radar, its like they don't even exist,AEW/NJPW exist to WWE). But with WWE being the most accessible wrestling program after the other accessible wrestling program(WCW)died, thats all people knew, lets not forget the fact that alot of people gave up wrestling altogether when WCW died too.
And yea,Omega/Okada-Omega-Ospreay is transcendent s***. Hell,I remember showing friends and family Omega/Tanahashi from WK13 and they were compelled throughout the match, but in the grand scheme of things, their gonna always go back to WWE,cause its always there, like the NFL is always "there".

I still gotta peep that Omega/Tanahashi match tbh...might get around to it today...that njpw account is a pain the ass but so many great matches on there to watch

Do that, great match that gets kinda overshadowed by the Omega/Jericho-Omega/Okada stuff, and yes,NJPW World is a treasure trove when you figure out how to work the site.

What's wild is I actually think Jericho and Omega's DON match was crazier though I understand the importance and hype when it comes to that New Japan match

That Roman promo wasn't all that tbh. He's had better promos. The Dusty impersonation was spot on tho.
