He's not a hero. He has a cult following that might view way but public's perspective has always been mixed, especially after the show went haywire by the end.
There's going to be a challenging balance they need to strike but there's always been a complex view of him. His own documentary didn't even portray him strictly that way

Needed to keep up the entertainment and drama for ratings. When you do that you lose sight of judicial process and ethics.
Then there was a sting op with a local official who never went to the prop house where they catch them. Hansen instead took cops and cameras to the man's personal home, who then blew his head off in front of cameras. Every other predator in that sting got their charges dropped because of how it was handled and people began pulling support. Attorney's began to poke holes at their strategies too.
Its a classic rise and fall story that's not black/white. He's an interesting person who is influential still and brought awareness to what disgusting people were doing, there's just an endless argument over methods/intent. Great subject for a film
