i mean yeah the term hinduism as all encompassing term was made up by the british because of a basically racist misunderstanding of culture and desire to pigeonhole the continent into easily categorizable systematic groups. It's not really a set of vastly different traditions though. The origin of what we call hinduism has roots in ancient tribal history hence the different schools of it, but it all draws from Vedic tradition, it's why there's not a vastly different system where there's complete different traditions - intersecting tribes had less contrary traditions and more traditions acting as counterparts to others. The standardization of vedic traditions happened way before the british, if anything it was the rise of Buddhism which historically caused other vedic traditions to consolidate.
