It sounds like there is a protocol developed for Indian students to leave Ukraine which involves contacting the Indian embassy or a helpline to be vetted first before being allowed to cross the border. It sounds like that the people who are being stopped at the border didn’t know to do this. There are plenty of posts of Indian students who were able to successfully leave and cross the border through these means.

from what i understand russia has been having relations with india for a while now, so it's not totally suprising. russia has been selling weapons and providing major support to india's defense industry (and vice versa to a lesser extent).

india and china are trying to isolate each other (which is a big reason why china is having friendly relations with pakistan), and russia beat the US to the punch during the 1971 war to become their biggest arms dealer. so russia is currently the closest thing to a superpower they can latch onto, and they didn't really want to piss it off.
