Those who think, like many liberals I've seen on twitter, that this is somehow a revelation that will surprise us and force us to change our mind etc are completely ignorant of our general argument to begin with. Our "support" for Russia in this has nothing to do with identifying Russia with socialism, much less Putin. We harbor no illusions about Putin's government (similarly we do not harbor illusions about Iran's clerical government despite being even anti-communist)

DNR and LNR are like states/oblasts, but they dont control the entire oblast yet
They are de facto in control over many areas since 2014, this is just Putin formalizing what was already the case
The signifance is that Ukraine probably lost these territories for a long term future now, whereas earlier the separatists might have accepted autonomy
