After this russians and separatists occupied Crimea and started bombing Donbass, our people were just fighting off our land and of course it intensified nationalist mood in the country, but it’s nothing crazy. Genuine question, how would that have helped? NATO is obviously flawed, but without the US it would have lost a significant amount of its defense leverage and that would lead me to guess that Putin would have been emboldened to begin this strategy earlier. Is the benefit just us not being obligated to intervene in any way? Or am I missing a broader context?
