I haven't been in this thread for that long and I'm no expert, but articles I've read have said Ukraine was far from joining NATO and there were no immediate plans for NATO to accept them ?
It seemed like more of Taiwan situation of ambiguity whereas Putin wanted 100% guarantee that they would never join

The US has violated the sovereignty of many nations and the expansion of NATO has essentially led to more military force encircling Russia. We backed Neo Nazi’s in the Ukraine and there’s leaked audio of us literally attempting to install new leadership against their fairly democratically elected leader. What Russia is doing is wrong but it shouldn’t be a surprise and our actions directly led to this moment. If you’re banging the war drum right now, I hope you get what’s coming to you.

The US doesn’t have a Putin problem, it has a problem with a nation that spans 2 continents, has oil, and nuclear weapons. Putin is being backed into a corner and this attack on Ukraine is him saying he won’t have it.
Putin called the collapse of the USSR the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the 20th century. This is definitely about him being scared of NATO
