this war will be a frozen conflict and stalemate

ukraine has got back 50% of territory it lost, past that the chances of further gains are diminishing

you don’t have to be pro russia or anything to acknowledge this

literally everyone who wasn't blindly pro-NATO/anti-RU/whatever understood that the best case scenario for the west was to create a forever war to financially exploit a la Afghanistan, rather than seeking an end to conflict

however, we were touted as Russian nationalists and fascists for not supporting NATO involvement last spring

the best view is to support nato aid but acknowledge the conflict will freeze

without nato aid the conflict would be frozen with russia having cut ukraine off from the black sea. defense companies will make money but that’s not the reason the americans have aided ukraine, plus even without it, countries like my own are going on insane rearmament drives due to the russian threat

ukraine isn’t part of nato or the eu unlike poland, and american leaders (business and political) have been glaringly implicit that they have no ideological commitment to ukraine, simply a financial and geopoltical one

get real, there’s no reason america wants this war to continue except for the fact that russians are spending leverage on someone else’s time

Yeah, and rightfully so cause no NATO involvement meant no Ukraine anymore

emphasis on geopolitical. can’t have russia gain any more power in europe. it’s unacceptable to the eu and us

and the view of the average ukrainian is that zelensky is doing what he can, but they are more nationalist and pro foreign aid than he is (and yes that includes the russophones)

no nato aid wouldnt mean no fighting it would mean car bombings, assassinations and insurgents. without an internationally and domestically recognised government that can draw support from a broad base of people , ukrainian resistance would potentially be led by some rather unsavoury characters

plus this omits that any settlement would probably see russia reattempt later

The people they asked abroad are also Ukrainian. Everyone who participated in the research either resides in Ukraine or migrated out. These are the countries listed... (Poland, Czech Republic, Germany, United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, France, Slovakia, and others).

    well this is interesting then

i dont think there can be any doubt that Russia has massively revolutionised war in the information space. it's got better over the past few years but we need to step up our ability to combat their disinformation

meanwhile, Wagner is terrorising the Sahel

absolute banger of an interview with Timothy Snyder

particularly what he says about how this war is seen as civilisational in russia, and how failure to understand russia comes from a modern western mistake to not look at the ‘why’

Snyder is a joke but he's right about the west not looking at the why being a mistake

oh nah its a popular rhetoric of 'us westerners cant understand the Russian mind' or whatever, it dates as far back as mid 20th century if not earlier

im sure Snyder at least unconsciously references that when he says that people are quick to dismiss the why and (possibly bc I couldn't read the article) write it off as 'he did it because hes crazy!'

they deserve to win and be free from what is frankly a genocidal maniac and his thugs

it isn’t going as well as it could, but they got 50% of all their lost land back. that’s still cause for celebration when at the time of the invasion it was expected that russia would sweep kyiv and maybe get to the polish border

    i say give them f-16s.

Dehumanisation of evil is always wrong, it results in a denial of our own potential for atrocities and in doing so, makes them more likely

In the case of Wagner group, they are humans like us, only they are absolutely defective and the rest of us are better off if we just vaporise them already
