while i don't think they're actually this intelligent realistically though there are a few angles where you can see russia destroying the pipeline. if they know or expect NATO escalation regardless, and they know the EU is moving away from the nordstream pipeline regardless because of US demands, it is quite smart to destroy it knowing that it'll cause significant internal distress among NATO members while sowing distrust among NATO populations to make war/escalation even more unfavorable - both to population distrusting of the US-led NATO, as well as the population who feels betrayed by leaders now due to lack of gas/energy. On russia's end most of the gas is now going to India, China, and ME anyway, not EU, so its not like this disrupts Russia's exports that much.
