You saw Spain?
This is ethnic cleansing. 25% of the Latvian population is ethnically Russian

they should probably teach both, just have latvian as the main one. totally valid to want to revive your language after nearly a century of suppression but in terms of practicality and the way you run your state, probably best to teach both
that being said, it's not ethnic cleansing unless they ban the language being spoken. unless a law is brought in that suppresses russian culture and bans the speaking of russian, people can still speak it, it just wont be the official language of state.
bad? probably. ethnic cleansing? nah
when italy reunified, tuscan dialect was taught in schools all across the new country. this was not a cleansing of sicilians and people from veneto, who prior to reunification would not be considered italian in the same way.

Well they banned teaching the Russian language. That is ethnic cleansing.
If the US said “all classes will be held in English, including those of Spanish students,” would the reaction from the Latino community be anything short of cultural erasure?

No its not. May be a step towards that though
Well they banned teaching the Russian language. That is ethnic cleansing.
ethnic cleansing is mass imprisonment, expulsion or killing of a minority
they havent banned teaching the russian language, the state has chosen to only put latvian on the curriculum, the schools are run by the state which derives authority from the democratic vote

ive never been to america but correct me if im wrong, isnt the entire education system taught in english, with other languages as non core subjects?

There are primarily Spanish speaking public schools across the West, and even Italian, Vietnamese, German, and French schools
And even then the the fact that the US doesn’t have an official language yet mandates the use of English for a multiethnic group of students is erasure
eu law should cover this
So when 24% of your country doesn’t speak Latvian as a first language, why should it mandated as the primary language they’re educated in? It makes no practical sense except to enforce an ethnonationalist agenda

your premise here is that the 24% of ethnic russians are not also latvian speakers, and the 56% latvian speakers cant also speak russian
realistically, they can both probably hold their own in both languages
unless you'd propose teaching more russian areas in only russian, it makes sense to have one as main, and teach russian as a subject so the russian minority can still learn it, and latvians continue learning russian
it also makes sense for latvian to be promoted, it was brutally suppressed, latvians got deported across the ussr, ethnic russians were brought in. policy of russification
obviously i dont agree with banning the entire use of language, and eu law should hold that russian be a subject, but having a language of education isnt ethnic cleansing, in no way are ethnic russians being prohibited from speaking russian.

You democracy loving liberals sure are quick to support blatantly fascist policies
S***s like clockwork

I literally said Russian should be taught as a subject in my view
My guy can't read

They say things like that last sentence to get ahead of what the obvious conclusion would be from the average person. If you can make it seem like it's a Russian talking point then you can nudge people to overlook it
I checked on the top Russian media sites out of curiosity if they actually did do what he said and i surprisingly didn't even find much of a mention over this move. Even when i searched specifically for Latvia and schools....nothing. There'd been rifts in the pass over them potentially doing this but little recently
Like of course that's Russiaphobic. You can be against Russia and still see that

Are they forced to move, imprisoned or even killed when they don't? If not, keep ethnic cleansing out of your mouth and focus on the killing in Ukraine
it is utterly insane to me that we have people justifying language laws itt

the forced assimilation of a population is ethnic cleansing. and if you think this is the end of things, then you haven't seen the logical end
