A Kremlin spokesperson said that they will still accept payments in dollars or euros for now. They also stated the process of the switch will be a gradual one and that contracts will most likely be renegotiated or they'll just expire and new contracts will reflect the new policy.

Can a country like Germany afford not to utilize Russian gas? Apparently, Putin is allowing them to save face by technically allowing them to pay in euros by having them open up a Russian Gazprombank account and that bank will handle the currency exchange to purchase the gas.

"Buyers must transfer foreign currency to a special, so called "K", account, and Gazprombank would then buy rubles on behalf of the buyers to transfer the payments in Russian currency to another special "K" account.

"De facto, for those who receive Russian gas, who pay for the deliveries, there is in fact no change. They just acquire rubles for the amount in currency which is stipulated in the gas contract," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Thursday."
