It was imperialism to be sure, but it's not at all comparable to colonialism. Same when you compare many other empires to New Imperialism.

i respectfully disagree but recognise the experience is absolutely close to you so people in any way looking like they are trivialising it will be a problem.

However what Russia did to expand is widely regarded as colonialism, large population transfers, suppression of culture etc. i just dont see how it isnt colonialism. it was also done with the intent of extracting resources as well as geopolitical gain

i do however agree that that specific tweet is probably bullshit

It can be called colonialism based on a very broad definition that would eventually come to the conclusion that all countries with different ethnicities in it that ever expanded their territory are colonial, I don't think it's a helpful definition if we're gonna put that in the same category of what Europe did in the Global South, because they're fundamentally different on a systemic level.
