Imperialist/expansionist war is course always “unreasonable”. But in an imperialist world with increasingly competing imperialist powers - and the contradictions between them becoming ever more acute - decisions like these are certainly rational from the perspective of a 2nd-tier world power attempting to protect its interests and re-establish its historical counter-hegemony

Explaining isn’t endorsing. Much like I can certainly say it makes 100% sense for businesses to price gouge after a natural disaster in the context of a capitalist system. I think price gouging is dog s*** behavior and people that engage in it are scum of the earth but it’s an incredibly rational decision for a capitalist to make in a capitalist world. You need to stop interpreting every explanation of a contradiction as an ethical value-judgement

But critical thinking bad because then bad guy has logic

"Venezuelan oil would be a perfect substitute for Russian oil in large part because Russian oil has been a perfect substitute for Venezuelan oil. Much of the oil refining industry on the U.S. Gulf Coast is built for heavy crude oil like that produced by Venezuela—some, such as the Citgo refinery in Lake Charles, Louisiana, was built specifically for Venezuelan crude. These refineries cannot run at capacity producing gasoline and other petroleum products from light oil grades such as those produced by U.S. shale drillers or Saudi Arabia, and there is not enough pipeline capacity to bring heavier oil grades down from Canada. "

I appreciate the explanation, it still smells to me that a bunch of pro-USSR peeps are itt constantly explaining the context of Putin’s decision. Like, we get it. NATO and the US knew that incorporating Ukraine was a red line for Russia, and still made moves towards that direction. Still, there’s a war today, civilians are dying, and Russia is solely responsible. To be itt all day explaining why Putin is acting rationally in his own right and resisting western imperialism, as people known on this forum for being anti-western, comes off as purposefully spotlighting the wrong things. Yes we all know you guys oppose Putin, but the whole “enlightened leftist” thing is getting really tired when, for example, the post below yours is a Russian tank shooting at a civilians car

Do you not realize the difference between what you just posted and reposting propaganda that can be self-debunked in three minutes?

But that is a small minority of the posts here and most of the readily debunked s*** is coming from Ukraine lol

Like the Guardian just today was shared a tweet from a UKR government page saying they had killed 12,000 Russians

I was at the gym a couple hours ago and CNN said “US government intel says 2,000-4,000 Russians have been killed”

Like UKR is spinning absolutely ludicrous stories, from Ghost of Kiev, Snake Island, to “6 Chernobyl’s” lol

That doesn’t negate Russian propaganda is very real but they’ve been pushing that internally more than externally, unlike UKR who just makes up whatever bullshit they want and immediately get signal boosted by every mainstream news source in the world

Wonder what Macarthur or Eisenhower would have done in this situation

MacArthur would be pushing for nukes to be used

Eisenhower wouldn’t have created these conditions in the first place, he had immense respect for the Soviets and Russia even as president

The US/NATO is the primary hegemon and as a result has hegemony in the media sphere too. We’re naturally going to highlight the end of things that’s seemingly completely derided both here and in all mainstream sources. The US/NATO is the number one enemy of the international working class so it is important that we expose their role and machinations in these things

And as stated before, my political tradition does not f*** with Russia at all post-1956 lol so this isn’t out of any love for Putin, it’s about recognizing the above mentioned fact that the US/NATO represents the most evil empire since the fall of the 3rd Reich and that things are more complicated than some Manichean view of the world in which Russia is the sole bad guy
