I guess the gain is Russia gets a part of the iron curtain back to protect themselves from NATO, plus better access to the Black Sea? With that said I can't imagine a scenario where a military occupation of the whole country is successful or worthwhile.

Even if they get rid of Zelensky and install some Pro-Russian puppet government, they probably won't be considered legitimate by other countries and will have to defend themselves against insurgencies that will likely form in the process.

Yeah the iron curtain part makes sense on the surface, but to your point that curtain is faulty at best considering the projection is only as good as Russia can continue to weather insurgents and sanctions. This whole situation is just becoming more ridiculous each day it continues
