listen man whether it is or isn't imperialism or whether it is or isn't ultimately moral doesn't mean the US should be spending effort and money chasing morals the country itself can't even hold abroad and no less that which doesn't even threaten in reality the stability of itself or its actual allies. if the US simply doesn't like Russia and wants to stop trade that's fine and whatever. but the US ramping up it's own operations and funneling money and arms abroad in the name of "morals" while also s***ting money out the ass on agenda-driven NGOs who do nothing but make society worse for everyone is something i think virtually everyone should agree is simply the wrong move. a lot of people hate the US as a country but don't support aggression or war against it - they simply make diplomatic decisions to push the US further away (and this in light of active operations of the US to undermine these countries).
