I think there's a difference in a general sense of being confrontational (Energy, Headlines, Worst Behavior, No Tellin', etc.) than an entire album full of songs that are overtly about a very specific very public situation that has been a shadow over all hip-hop news for the past two straight years (Dust, Whisper My Name, Make Them Pay, What Did I Miss?, 2 Hard 4 The Radio, Make Them Remember, etc.)

I like the album but I could understand how someone would just be burnt out on the subject matter of the project given the past two years of hip-hop discourse

I mean I can see someone being exhausted with the discourse but at the same time why would he make generalized confrontational songs when he actually has real issues with several people in the industry that makes zero sense and would’ve been lame asf imo, so glad he didn’t do that

Kendrick got his post battle victory lap album off with GNX and now it’s Drake’s turn with Iceman. Instead of clapping back with something mediocre he took his time, 2 years which is a reasonable development time for an album especially one that you want to be good creatively, rap wise production wise mix wise etc, and now he getting his s*** off. I mean I know you are just playing devils advocate so it’s all but ijs from my point of view I really don’t see how Iceman could’ve turned out any differently and I’m glad it didn’t

I mean yeah content is one part of it, but in the end it's music and the music is great on Iceman.

People listen to Don Toliver's h**** middle school level lyrics and say the music is important, so why don't they apply the same rule on Drake

    Different artists, different contexts

People don't listen to Don Toliver for the same reason that they listen to Drake for the same reason that they listen to Nas for the same reason that they listen to Glorilla for the same reason that they listen to whoever

Not saying it should've turned out differently, just saying I can understand why someone would be burnt out on the content

The past two years in hip-hop fandom and media has been an endless barrage of nonsense stan wars as a result of the beef

I'm not shocked that there are people out there who favor MAID OF HONOUR or HABIBTI because they just don't wanna hear about this s*** anymore

I mean that’s fine but those are non rap albums

I feel like as a fan I am able to separate my own personal exhaustion with something from judging rap as rap based on rap standards

That’s like rating an open world game or souls like poorly because there is a s*** ton of them and I’m tired of it, it’s like noooo if you are tired then be tired go ahead and tap out but if you are going to form an opinion it should still be based on weather or not it is a good game and a good representation of its genre

    Mr Carter

Saying the only reason someone wouldn’t like this album is because of a bias against Drake is wild

This is a great album but y’all doing the most in here

It’s really not wild if you being objective and have a reasonable understanding of modern commercial rap and modern braggadocio rap which is the space iceman occupies

What valid criticism could you have? Production, raps, songwriting, execution, all on point

    How is it not lol

    It’s the same principle

    If you are tired be tired but ā€œME tiredā€ doesn’t = ā€œBad album/gameā€

People judge music based on if they enjoy listening to it or not

The content on this album could definitely turn away someone who doesn't get any enjoyment out of hearing him talk about the beef and his record label, despite how well-produced and well-written it is

What your a***ogy is describing is genre burnout, this is not what I'm referring to when I'm talking about the specific thematic content of ICEMAN

The same way that Mr. Morale is a well-produced and well-written album, but a lot of people just have no interest in hearing him talk about generational trauma on wax

Burnout isn’t just associated with genre though it could be applied to anything

For example I can say I’m burned out with hearing Pusha rap about Coke every album but that shouldn’t be able to fly as a valid criticism of the music. If he is rapping well and the production is good and everything comes together nicely he deserves credit for his work no matter how ā€œburned outā€ someone decides they feel like being. If you are burned out that means you are checked out in my book which also means your opinion doesn’t count because the conversation is no longer about quality it’s about your personal bandwidth

Same applies to Morale that’s actually a great example, not ā€œfeeling like hearingā€ something isn’t a valid criticism. Was the music executed well or not? End of story. If it was great that’s a good album, regardless of what this or that person has patience or attention span for

Aside from someone simply not loving the music at face value

There are plenty of people that aren’t biased against Drake that simply don’t care for his cosplaying as a tough guy. Hip hop is based on authenticity, or at least is was historically. He’s still talking about being in the mob and gang signs and punching people in the face on here.

His lyrics can also just be cringe sometimes and I’ve heard plenty of people say they can’t listen to j Cole for that same reason. He’s saying asap rocky has relationship probs cause his wife doesn’t post in support of him. Cringe(sounds good and is catchy tho)

I love the music on iceman but if you know anything about Drake as a person there is some cognitive dissonance necessary if you’re listening to every lyric.

You right if you don’t pay attention to the lyrics tho, all this s*** sounds great. It just doesn’t hold up when you look at it closely

I've always had the impression that around 2014/2015 his circle became way more dangerous and by default his associations with these types of people has changed him fundamentally.

There was that article that linked him with some dark s*** in Toronto (I cant remember it now)

Idk if I am just being a weird fan here though but I just feel like he's changed and his music is a clear example of that.

2010/11/12/13 Drake doesn't make Plot Twist, Going Bad etc
