Alright I think I’ve listened enough to these albums to give a proper “initial” impression on them. I’ll keep it abbreviated until I live with them more:
ICEMAN - I think this is the best case scenario of a full rap project from Drake. First four songs one of his strongest runs ever. The beats are very fresh and for pushing 20 years in coming up with new flows is appreciated. I do see the simile complaints and there is still a bit too much autotune for my liking but on this project it’s less as annoying (see below). I also think this album gives me proof that a full Conductor x Drake tape would not really be that interesting to me. I think the “conversation rap song over boom bap beat” types on here are good but they’re definitely overstaying their welcome. I’m comfortably giving this an 8.5/10 and one of his best albums this decade, maybe even ever. Hard to even pick the standouts but right now what’s been stuck in my head is Make Them Cry (second best intro of his imo), Whisper My Name, Janice STFU, National Treasure/B’s on the Table (I really consider this one song), Plot Twist, Little Birdie
MAID OF HONOUR - Second favorite tape out of the bunch. So many interesting instrumentals on here and it really stands out at how much he has grown as an experimental artist. Sometimes there is a miss or two but there are so many songs on here that are like “holy s*** this is awesome”. Autotune notably gets more worse on here though and sometimes it can get to be a bit too much on songs depending on how I’m feeling about it. 7/10 which is pretty good considering ICEMAN was the “main” project. Also side note idk why he insists on putting pointless interludes on albums lately but not needed at all. Standouts are Princess, Goose and the Juice, Hoe Phase, BBW and Outside Tweaking, Stuck
HABIBITI - Least favorite by far. This is where the autotune singing really gets a bit grating for me. I’ve said it numerous times on here but idk what happened to his singing voice whether it is damage or laziness or artistic choices but it really bothers me because although I wouldn’t ever consider him a great singer he has shown over his career he has a good voice and range. If you took his old voice and slapped it on here I think it would be tremendously better. Maybe it will grow on me more but this is the one where it felt like it wasn’t fully needed although there are some great moments sprinkled in here like Classic (all timer), Slap the City, Fortworth (minus the pointless PND feature), WNBA and the intro. 5.5/10

Rap was the most popular genre at that time (thanks to Drake)
He has to build it back up now from the bottom
