41 tracks = artistic integrity out the window, just throw whatever at the wall and see what sticks to the Spotify playlists
I mean that’s 2020s drake. Was hoping he’d be bullied into making a great album again
What if iceman ep4 is a full visual album then it drops along with the other album at midnight?
Finished For All The Dogs.
To me, this album is a bit overhated overall by people. I have my issues with it, but there’s some really good stuff on here and a very specific soundscape that is a nice change of pace for a Drake album.
The good: I really love the first three opening tracks, right up until the interlude in Calling For You. Drake’s R&B bag is in rare form on this whole album. Slime You Out, Tried Our Best, Drew A Picasso, Bahamas Promises, and Members Only are all phenomenal. There’s a sense of thematic focus on all of the R&B records on here. Away From Home is the best introspection we’ve gotten from Drake since probably NWTS. IDGAF is the one Drake/Yeat collab that I think sounds good, that beat is just undeniable. Rich Baby Daddy is super fun and the production is great on it. His delivery on 8am in Charlotte is super refreshing.
The bad: Most of the rap songs. This is his first album where it sounds like he’s fully trying to appeal to a younger demographic with the rap cuts, and it doesn’t really work at all. Fear Of Heights and Daylight are forgettable, Another Late Night is whatever but it’s placed awkwardly in the tracklist. The radio concept feels tacked on and half-baked, would’ve liked that to be more fleshed out and present on the entire album. Gently is horrible and doesn’t fit on this project whatsoever. Lyrically, there are a lot of cringe lines and eye-rolling punchlines scattered throughout the album.
As far as the Scary Hours Edition goes, not much to mention really. Evil Ways is pretty dope, You Broke My Heart is cool, but the other four tracks are extremely sleepy and forgettable, and while listening to them you have to question whether they would exist if not for the Joe Budden Podcast.
Overall, the album feels like another mixed bag but leans good overall. Probably my favorite Drake “traditional” studio album since NWTS. Wish it could’ve been trimmed down a tad though. 7/10
