They strategically used favors and payola to pay off a lot of the most influencer voices in the hip-hop media to support them
They botted their stuff and had help with the algos, I literally experienced this as the next song playing would suddenly always be NLU.
They gassed NLU up and orchestrated it becoming viral
They marketed themselves as being "real hip-hop" and that Drake was a fake, culture vulture and whatnot
They made it a race thing, despite Drake having a black father and that side of his family being from the south
People who are casuals will always then follow what is trendy and dont want to be looked as standing on what they perceive is the "wrong" side or fear they are not "real hip-hop" fans. It is a lot of psychology working in their favor here. They had set it up that way.
Few will take time to listen and go through facts
Especially when one side is just screaming over it
The label and the industry put everything into it. Used all their resources to manufacture it into a "win" for Kendrick.
