Hot take but it really is about the same. People retroactively forgot how much hype was around CLB.

CLB (2021) came out 3 years after his last real album Scorpion (2018). In some ways expectations were higher because he was coming off one of his best albums. It had an unusually long hype cycle for a Drake release (like now). He put out a tape and some hits to further build anticipation (like now). Every single snippet slapped (like now). There was what looked like a partnership with ESPN and broader sports world joining in on making memes to boost promo (like now). You had Ak and Charlamagne saying they heard it was going to be a classic (like now).

Views probably was the peak as far as hype leading up to a Drake release. I could be out of touch but CLB, Scorpion, and Iceman feel about the same to me.
