Finished So Far Gone and Thank Me Later.

So Far Gone is a genuine classic in every sense of the word. For what is essentially a coming-out project, it’s astonishing that it sounds as fleshed out and fully realized as it does. Drake sounds as hungry as ever, you can really hear the passion in his voice in every single song on here, he was determined to make it by any means necessary. The mix of rap, R&B, and pop music on this tape is simply genius. It bums me a little that, as his career progressed, he never further explored some of the super pop sound that’s found on songs like Little Bit and Let’s Call It Off, but they stand the test of time regardless. This is an absolute CLASSIC. 9/10

Thank Me Later attempts to recapture that same magic with a more big-budget polish, and the results are a little mixed overall. Don’t get me wrong, there are some absolutely amazing records on here: Karaoke, The Resistance, Over, Shut It Down, Miss Me, etc. But overall it feels a little too… clean. And if So Far Gone is timeless, then this album feels very much like a product of 2010 when relistening 16 years later. Not to say that it’s bad, but songs like Fireworks, Show Me a Good Time, Up All Night, and Thank Me Now haven’t aged the best, even if they’re still fun to listen to. Drake still sounds hungry on here, but out of his entire discography this definitely feels like the only project where the label had a major influence on what the end product ended up being. 6/10

Nah Fireworks/Thank Me Now aged fine

Nah Fireworks/Thank Me Now aged fine

Nah they both sound very dated to me, especially the production on Thank Me Now

  • I’m doing my own relisten of only studio albums (I play all of his projects regularly and recently anyway so trying something different), started with TML last night

Thank Me Later is a 10/10 and one of the greatest debut albums ever. It’s taken for granted because of everything around it but it plays through perfectly and similar to Reasonable Doubt it presents a new heir to the throne. The features are crazy the songs are classic hits and the fact that he came out the gate competing with Eminem Recovery shows how different he was. The singing on the hooks and a few melodic songs balanced with a lot of rapping from the boy is dope to me, it cemented him as a star and took rap to new heights. Thank Me Now is very Regrets like, not tonally or lyrically but as a polarizing outro to an absolute classic. Dropping it in summer and having the fireworks on the intro and some of the other records, the boy knew what he was doing. He ran the summer and created memories with this one, definitions of a classic. Not a single skip. The end of Fancy is beautiful.

Fireworks aging bad is a terrible take. It might be his best song to me. It’s his Can’t Knock the Hustle. Great introduction

It's very much a product of its time, doesn't mean it's a bad song, but it sounds very "debut rap album intro" that was popular around that time. Drake's rapping is very good on it though

Funny how some people and media wanna act like they were "objective" and are getting mad about people now calling out or saying that they are not accepted back.

    Miss me with that s***.

    Now they victims... jesus christ.

They didnt give af about taking money, laughing and not hearing anything about what Drake was saying during the whole duration of it.

Continued to celebrate his "demise" afterwards.

Now its "im excited about the album" and are acting like they are the "sane" ones about this? That we should all love and enjoy things together again.

The hypocrisy is simply unbelievable. Fake ass people.

"it is okay to like both"

You showed none of that grace for about two years.

    "picking sides corny"

Acting like you didnt pick sides?!

I hope Drake calls out all this bullshit, because they still tryna control the narrative in their favor. They aint slick.

It’s like the best version of that type of song. The firework sounds on it sound great, the piano is beautiful, the 40 beat and Drake’s sincerity and concise writing still hit for me. The Alicia hook is dope, I never really felt like that song had a time stamp on it in the same way that something like Show Me a Good Time might have (which I also love).

The whole concept of fireworks is just dope. It sets such a mood
